In the mid 60’s the Heller family bought Miller’s Flower Shop on Poplar Avenue. The name became Heller’s Flower Shop. In the late sixties they moved their store to 259 Jefferson Avenue in a building that once housed Price’s Hardware. In fact, a customer recently told Edye that he bought his first gun and first rose in the same building. Peggy Byard married into the Heller family and began working at Heller’s Flowers in 1971. In 1985, Heller’s Flowers and Greenhouse was transitioned from Edgar and Angela into the hands of their sons Ed and Frank. Eventually the Flower Shop and Greenhouses became separate businesses with Ed and Peggy running the family store. In 1997, Angela Marie Rich Heller the founder of Heller’s Flowers passed. Her laughter and love of life continue to inspire her family daily.
Through the ups and downs of the family and the family business, eventually Peggy became the sole proprietor of Peggy Byard’s Flower Shop:Peggy’s Posies.Peggy’s mother Nila Byard, after her retirement from BM Spur School of Nursing, began helping her daughter at the store. In 2005, Peggy and Ed’s son, Gerald Eli (Jerry), began working on his Masters in School Counseling and returned to the family business. During her studies at West Virginia University- Dental School, their daughter Amber Rose would come home on the weekends and holidays and help decorate the windows, make bows, and restore the building. In 2007, their daughter Edye Thomas returned to the business where she had previously worked full-time from 1994 to 2004. She had pursued a career in teaching at Wheeling Central. In 2008, Edye and Gerald Eli became the proprietors of their family business. They started the corporation Edye & Eli’s LLC d.b.a Peggy’s Posies.
In recent years, the family has begun archiving their Grandfather Biggie’s memorabilia and have dedicated a corner in the store “Biggie’s Corner” to his life’s work. Biggie Byard is well known for his local humanitarian efforts and his lifetime political career.
Angela’s husband, Edgar, was able to work beside his grandchildren for a couple years while he was able bodied. Now in a nursing home, he expresses his pride and hope as his grandchildren continue his life’s dream and hard work.
Edye’s quote “the beauty of flowers represent the beauty, delicacy, and miracle of life.”
